Take it Outside

For some, box lacrosse, basketball, wrestling, and other winter sports are coming to a close. As you start going outside and starting you’re Spring lacrosse season, be sure to take some concepts you’ve learned inside and bring them outside. That’s being a Studlete.

3 examples of bringing what you’ve learned inside, to the outside.

1. Wrestlers should use counter moves on opponents when fighting for ground balls

2. Hoopers should continue to play help defense as they defend outside in 7v7 (girls) and 6v6 (boys) situations

3. Box laxers should play that two man or woo man game when playing outside in even situations

Comments below if you’ve got other ways you take what you learn inside and use it on the outside

The Value of a High School Coach

It’s a rainy, cold, Tuesday night. I’m heading over to Lawrence Road Middle School in Uniondale where a free clinic is being held for youth boys and girls. I’m expecting a couple boys and girls, with a hand full of parents in the stands. Instead, I show up to a gymnasium full of High School aged Varsity players working with  dozens of boys and girls. The stands are packed with parents curious, excited, and some unsure of what to expect.

Some boys and girls are picking up a stick for the first time, others picking up a stick for the 5th time that day. It was such an amazing site to see. High School aged boys and girls dedicating their time to developing younger players within their communities. A big part of tonight’s success was thanks to Coach Hugo Charles, the Men’s Varsity Coach for Uniondale. Coach Charles understands the importance of developing quality youth program, creating a lacrosse culture in the community he coaches, and making sure his current HS players dedicate their time to helping those who luck up to them!

I’m humbled by the opportunity to work with such generous and passionate coaches. I look forward to continue helping spread the game of lacrosse on Long Island, helping build youth programs in towns such as Uniondale, and working with such valuable coaches, such as Hugo Charles. To me, the value of a HS coach shouldn’t be gaged by how many wins or losses he or she has. It should be judged by the impact they have on their community, their players, and their sport.

All of us > Any of us

How do you celebrate a goal, a game, an accomplishment?

Do you run away or towards your teammates?

If you run away, make sure not to forget, “All of us will always be greater than any of us.”

Are You Legit?

Prove it at FLG’s Summer Showcase.

FLG is offering a three-day Legit Showcase to be held this summer at LIU Post in Brookville, Long Island. It is attracting young male and female studletes from throughout North America, 22 states so far, as well as Canada, who are gearing up for a chance to distinguish themselves as top players, ready to receive great coaching and looking to enhance those leadership qualities that make them “legit.”

“It’s a great opportunity for uncommitted rising freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior lacrosse players to get ‘eyes on’ from dozens of coaches and recruiters representing some of the best schools in the country,” says Corey Winkoff, Program Director for FLG. “More than 50 college coaches will work with participating athletes providing them with beneficial strategies and ways to enrich their personal and athletic development with the goal of becoming truly outstanding players.”

It’s your chance to prove you’re “Legit.” What does legit mean? It means that you’re a hard-working, recruitable athlete, someone with drive and a passion to play the game at the next level – and an individual who shows leadership.

“We’ve hired 56 college coaches, 24 high school coaches and 24 college players to work the boys’ event. That’s a remarkable 10 to 1 ratio for participating boys at the showcase and a 6 to 1 ratio for girls at their event,” says Winkoff.

Legit 5

What makes this event unique?

  • Participants will stay in the LIU Post dorms, eat in the campus cafeteria and enjoy on-campus activities
  • Your first night will be kicked off by a keynote motivational speaker who will address the impact of the decision to be a legit player at the high school level
  • Players get a chance to play with a diversity of student athletes from all over the U.S. and Canada
  • Coaches will be able to watch and have easy access to players at all times from four adjacent fields
  • An amazing coach-to-player ratio — 10-to-1 for boys and 6-to-1 for girls

How will I stand out at the event?

Throughout the showcase, based on performance as well as exemplary leadership and other admirable characteristics, boys will be awarded stickers to be placed on their helmets and girls will receive bracelets branding them as “Legit” players. The stickers and bracelets will draw the attention of coaches and recruiters. So, it’s up to you to make the plays and exhibit the qualities that will earn you observable Legit status at the event.

How will this event help get me recruited?

FLG, in partnership with Lacrosse Recruits, helps opens doors by giving you the best advantages and tools to market yourself to colleges.

  • Every participant will be invited to take part in a one-hour recruiting seminar at the event
  • Those who choose to join Lacrosse Recruits will have access to a mobile responsive app known as Event Beacon which takes a college coach’s target list of recruits and cross references it with the event attendee list
  • Lacrosse Recruits will also have an HD camera filming at every field; you will have the option to purchase these films or a professionally edited highlight reel to send to your select colleges

Depending on the package you purchase, many of these options are included. Click the link below to see pricing details for the Legit Showcase; registration starts at just $595.
