From FLG to PRO

From FLG to PRO, Brandon Mangan, was drafted yesterday in the sixth round by the Ohio Machine.

Not only is Brandon an FLG Alum, but he coaches and works full-time with FLG Lacrosse.

Brandon’s passion for the game has driven him from being one of the top attack man on Long Island and in the college game to becoming an athlete playing at the highest level.

We are very excited for Brandon. Congratulations! #Studlete

What to say in a huddle

“Let’s go coaches! You got two minutes and we’re starting the second half!”

One of the negatives with club lacrosse games is there are no timeouts. Therefore, you really have to make the most of the two minute half-time with your team.

Being that a two minute timeout isn’t much time, it’s crucial to express important points efficiently, effectively, and in a timely manner.

In chronological order, below is what we like to express to our team during the halftime of a club lacrosse game:

1- Positives from the 1st half. It’s important to open the huddle with the things your team did well. Players always respond to positive feedback.
2- Now that you have your team engaged, it’s important tell them not to let up!
3- Whether your winning or losing, you have to emphasize areas of focus for the 2nd half. These can be areas to improve on and correct.
4- Sharing important 1st half stats can get your team to understand why your focusing on certain areas for the second half.
5- With half-time winding down, your team should start to focus on the next play, next face-off, next possession. Small steps towards making big plays.
6- It’s important for your players to take the field know who is starting and who is next to go in. As a coached, you must be organized! Know your lines!
7- Hopefully your halftime speech will help your team win the 2nd half. Winning means improving on areas of weakness, building on your strengths, and playing consistently at a high level!

FLG LACROSSE: More than a team, it’s a program

Joining a lacrosse team has its rewards. You get competitive training, experience wins and losses, and learn the rules of the game. Still, what may be missing can be even more important and it’s what only a lacrosse program is able to provide: education, personal as well as athletic development and dedication to the future of its players. When you’re part of a program you belong to a group of like-minded individuals who share the same definition of success!

There’s a big difference between putting together a lacrosse team and building a lacrosse program. Key among those differences is developing a blueprint that lays out the program’s goals, draws the right people to it and leaves plenty of room for growth and change. A program has a plan, offers equal opportunity, educates and shares its passion with those involved.

To be most effective, a program should be built around:

  • Great training from qualified coaches who care about personal and athletic development
  • Opportunities for equal playing time and guidance through the recruiting process
  • A solid program-wide curriculum
  • Methodology
  • Constructive player evaluations and feedback

A program offers opportunity to its members. At FLG Lacrosse, we are proud of our continuing efforts to improve and structure our lacrosse programs so that they work toward the best interests of each player.

We work towards the best interest of each player by:

  • Giving multiple repetitions to players at our training events
  • Having great coach to player ratios at our events so that each player gets lots of attention, instruction, and training
  • Briefing all coaches before our events so they can act in accordance with our goals

At FLG, our programs focus on building toward the future. Sports can play a huge role in getting into the right colleges, fostering leadership qualities and developing a sense of community.

How do our programs build toward the future?

  • Each member of the program is provided with a free online recruiting profile to research and connect with colleges
  • Members get advice and guidance on how to use these recruiting resources
  • We meet with families about the recruiting process, opportunities and how to impress colleges
  • We offer community service for players in our program to help build their resumes

We take pride in the results of our programs. We’re happy when participants ask questions; it signals their intellectual development for the game and the growth of important life skills. We’re excited when we hear of players who are actively involved in the recruiting process, learning all they can about the colleges and coaches that will guide them through the next important phase of their lives. We’re proud when a parent sends us an article that his son or daughter is doing something productive for their community or school. We’re delighted when we learn that one of our FLG Select Players has been voted captain of his or her middle school, high school, college or professional team. And, we’re honored when our alumni come back to serve as coaches or mentors in the programs that helped them succeed.

A program is much more than just a team. It’s closer to a life coaching experience that will serve your son or daughter well beyond the few years they participate in it. It’s a true foundation for their future.

How is an FLG lacrosse program closer to a life coaching?

  • We have an entire Alumni Community that stays involved in the program. Many of our Alumni come back to share their experiences at the next level with current players in the program
  • We provide jobs for our Alumni or connect them with potential leads to get jobs during college and after they graduate
  • We offer networking opportunities for Alumni and current players in the program
  • We stay connected with our Alumni via social media, text, email, and more
  • We offer awards to outstanding studletes
  • We maintain an open line of communication for our families in the program and for our Alumni
  • If you call or email, we pick up! We don’t hide from families in our program like many lacrosse “program” directors do
  • We run coaches clinics so our coaches and trainers continue to develop as leaders and mentors
  • Plus, FLG Directors take coaching workshops and attend leadership activities to grow at their job

Our program goes well beyond athletic development. We support, build connections and prepare our studletes for the future.

If you currently have a lacrosse program, let us know how you are doing and feel free to comment or share stories about what makes you proud. To learn more about how FLG builds a Program, contact Program Director Corey Winkoff: [email protected] or 516.750.6500

Did I hear someone say “college road trip?”

FLG is excited to announce that it is offering a unique experience for high-school aged players in its program:  a College Road Tour! For the past two years, Mike and Corey have gone on the road in February to check out some of the area’s best college lacrosse programs, as well as share the FLG philosophy with those coaches and learn what type of student each school wants. Now, FLG is offering an incredible opportunity to its players. FLG is hiring a coach bus and inviting its studletes to join them on a seven-day, four-state tour to visit 27 area schools during February break!

“The mission of our College Road Tour is simple—familiarize our players with the schools, coaching staff and programs within driving distance of Long Island, so we can help each of them find the right school,” says Corey Winkoff. “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity!”

The FLG Road Tour consists of meetings with coaching staff, attending games, attending practices and campus visits. In addition to learning more about the schools they might be considering, FLG program players will get an opportunity to:

    • Build relationships
    • Have a great life experience
    • Grow friendships
    • Get closer with teammates
    • Experience big-time college sporting events
    • Spend time with the FLG Directors and coaches
    • See for themselves the differences between schools
    • Learn what they really want in a college
    • Gain valuable experiences that will serve them well as they go through the recruitment process

The 2016 FLG College Road Tour is taking rising high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors, who are not yet committed to a university, on a seven-day, four-state tour of colleges over February break. Students can see for themselves what each of the 27 schools offers in the way of lifestyle, student body and team experience. All campuses are within driving distance of Long Island. Your studlete will meet with coaches, tour campuses and learn about the college choices available to them.

From campus drive-throughs to watching big-time hoop games, the FLG College Road Tour will give student athletes an opportunity to see schools at every level.

As part of the FLG College Road Tour, your studlete will visit urban as well as rural colleges, large and small universities, highly selective academic schools, selective academic schools and colleges that offer D1, D2, D3 and club lacrosse programs. See a full list of the schools on our tour at https://flglacrosse.com/flg-college-road-tour/.

Buses depart on February 14 and return on February 20 for an all-inclusive tour price of $995 payable in two installments by January 15 or the full amount can be paid upon registration on or before the January 15th deadline. We encourage registering right away as space is limited to one bus accommodating no more than 40 students plus coaches and chaperones.

FLG’s all-inclusive college road tour includes:  6 nights of hotel accommodations, luxury bus transportation, breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, evening activities, supervision and an FLG College Road Tour sweatshirt.

“We are deeply committed to assisting in the recruiting process. It’s our goal to help each of our students make the most of their future and getting into the right college can make all the difference,” says Mike Winkoff.

Bring it!

Some follow their passion and live a very successful life. Others, don’t have the luxury of making a career out of something they are passionate about.

Instead, bring passion to your work every day. Regardless of what you do or the path you’re on, bring it!

The Resistance

Author, Steven Pressfied describes the resistance as a force of nature that prevents us from doing work that matters. It’s a repelling force, that’s negative. Its aim is to shove us away and distract us from doing our work.

Any acts in life that reject immediate gratification in favor of long-term growth, health, or integrity, will elicit Resistance.

Stop Sign

Below is a list of items that might elicit Resistance in your life:

1) Prevent someone or a group of people at school from bullying

2) Changing the culture of your athletic Program

3) Building an after-school club that helps other people

4) Going on a diet or health regimen to improve your overall well-being

5) Educating yourself on any particular subject

If you are faced with an opportunity to create work, learn, or something that matters, prepare yourself for the resistance. You can fight it. It can be beat. The resistance can be fought with persistence, hard work, passion, dedication, and positivity.

Fight the resistance. Make. Believe
