The Perfect Coaching Duo

The Perfect Coaching Duo

We’ve been running club lacrosse teams for about 10 years now. Over the past ten years, we’ve learned a lot about how to build the most effective coaching staffs for our teams. Today, for this week’s Whiteboard Wednesday session, the FLG Club Directors sat down and brainstormed this idea.

When it comes to coaching club lacrosse, it’s usually best and most effective to have 2 full-time coaches for every club lacrosse team in your program. When analyzing the two people that should work together, it’s important to understand that these coaches must agree upon certain cornerstone values. If one coach only cares about winning and the other coach only cares about developing, they will never be able to work together for long. Secondly, it’s important to understand that your coaching duo must compliment each other on certain characteristics. For example, if you have two coaches that only care about offense and scoring goals, the defensive players on your team will suffer and lack the attention they deserve.

Build Perfect club Lax Coaching Duo

For the sake of educating our followers on what it takes to build the perfect club lacrosse coaching-duo, we’ve organized our thoughts below:

Below are 3 cornerstone values that BOTH coaches must agree upon in order for them to have a successful club season:

  1. Respectboth coaches must respect one another, they must respect their team, their program, and the game itself.
  2. Successboth coaches must have the same definition of success. In our program, we define success by our player’s ability to continuously develop into being the best studlete they can be. All of the FLG coaches share the same definition of success.
  3. Relationshipsboth coaches need to have a good working relationship. In the FLG program, we have coaches who are married, we have coaches who are best friends, and we have coaches who have been coaching together for years. This makes a big impact as they work with their teams. Coaches who have a great working relationship, provide an culture that kids want to be a part of.

Below are 3 traits that coaches can compliment each other on, helping them have a successful club season:

  1. Personality – A coach that is loud and vocal, can be complimented by a coach that’s calm and cordial. A loud coach allows player’s to get instruction while they’re running around on the field. Having a calm, quiet coach can be good when players need to be settled down or need coaching on the sidelines.
  2. Coaching Style – A coach that is constantly criticizing, can be complimented by a coach that is constantly motivating. It’s great to have a coach that critiques players and expects a lot out of them. However, young players need positive encouragement as well. It’s great to have that extra boost of confidence when needed.
  3. Age – It’s great to compliment an older, more experienced coach with a younger, energetic coach. Older coaches have experience dealing with parents, important situations, emergency situations, and in-game adjustments. Younger coaches are closer to the game, might relate better to the kids (depending on their age), and could serve as a mentor or someone for the player’s to look up to.

It’s important to understand the difference between what coaches should agree upon vs. compliment each other on. If you do this and hire coaches that follow those guidelines, your club will be that much closer to finding the perfect coaching duos.

The Man In The Red Bandana

This past Wednesday, Coach Wink and I were lucky enough to have been invited to the premier of “The Man in the Red Bandana.” The Man in the Red Bandana is a documentary about the impact Welles Remy Crowther has made on the world during and since the horrible terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11th, 2001. The film was a thoughtful piece, which takes viewers through the early life of Welles leading up to the attacks. The film provides an in depth description of what happened on 9/11/01 and how Welles Crowether was able to save so many lives. The last half of the documentary shows the movement that has been orchestrated to remember Welles and what he stood for. A Red Bandana has been used as a symbol to represent heroism, patriotism, bravery, courage, and leadership. From marathons to packed football stadiums, the red bandana has caught on like wildfire, spreading throughout this great Nation. Today, the Red Bandana Project has inspired millions of people around the world!

Never forgot those who died on this day in history. A special thanks to Welles Remy Crowther and the hero’s that fought to save the lifes of so many. You’ve inspired so many and you will never be forgotten. God bless.

Inaugural Joseph Visone Award

Every Tuesday morning, FLG Lacrosse launches an email blast highlighting several FLG studletes who are featured online. Typically, FLG studletes are featured in the news for their outstanding play on the field. This week, we would like to highlight one special player from our program who was in the news for being an outstanding person.

Ryan Kelly, who is a senior midfielder/attackman for Sayville High School, is a quality lacrosse player and student. He has verbally committed to play college lacrosse at Stevens Tech. This past year at the annual Sayville Football Varsity Awards dinner, Ryan was honored with an award for his character, leadership, and selflessness.

Last summer, going into the 2014/2015 High School Football season, the Sayville community lost Joseph Visone after a battle with Brain Cancer. Joseph was a senior student-athlete at Sayville High School and a member of the Sayville High School Football team. Joseph was a well-liked, selfless, and hard working young man. After the 2014/2015 Football season, the Sayville High School Head Football Coach said, “we would like to honor a player on our team with the first ever Joseph Visone Award.” In his speech, Coach Haas said, “I couldn’t think of a better candidate for this award than Ryan Kelly.”

FLG is very proud to say Ryan played for the FLG Program! We are very proud of him for being recognized for this award. It is one tremendous honor!

The Return: Steve Jahelka

What’s up FLG family, Steve Jahelka here. This is the inaugural blog of many that will be keeping you up to date throughout the spring on my recovery from surgery.

I had surgery January 8th to completely repair my torn labrum and bicep tendon in my right shoulder, as well as the total detachment of the bicep tendon and reattachment in a more linear spot (a simplified version of otherwise boring and complicated medical terms). Since then, I have been on my quest to recovery, which has consisted of icing, squeezing a stress ball, watching a lot of movies, and trying to make a sling somewhat stylish.

Hopefully, through my journey on the road back to a complete recovery and, ultimately, the lacrosse field, you can use my experience as a guide when you suffer an injury or if you aren’t performing as well as you would like on the lacrosse field to stay positive. Being injured comes with the territory of being a competitive lacrosse player and, unfortunately, is the risk you run when you constantly put your body on the line day in and day out at practice and in games. But, injuries are by no means the end of the world. I am really excited to start recovering and challenge myself everyday to get healthier.

Keep hitting the wall and playing as much lax as you can with your buddies to prepare for the season. More blogs to come…
